This design reimagines an architectural cartouche proclaiming King Minos' kingdom in Crete. While elements of the cartouche's design can be found as far back as Ancient Roman architecture atop arched entrances to buildings, the intricate stylings commonly attributed to cartouches were not prevalent until the sixteenth century. The bull ring-like adornments on either side of the vessel symbolize the Minotaur confined beneath the palace floor, a creature central to Minos' identity.
